µ-DAI in Nigeria: Awareness for the Data Science for SMEs project in 2019

In August 2018, µDAI signed a partnership agreement with Redeemer’s University in Ede, Nigeria to provide workshops on harnessing the value of Data Science for academic staff at the university and SMEs in Nigeria. With the sponsorship of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), µDAI participated in the Maiden Research Fair event of Redeemer’s University, themed "Technovation in an Evolving Society". At the event, µDAI’s representatives presented on "Data Science for Good Governance", expounding on ground/breaking opportunities and challenges of Big Data in attaining good governance. Representatives of SMEs, academic institutions and public enterprises were at the event.

Following the Research Fair, µDAI organised an executive workshop for 14 C-Level SME representatives in Lagos. During the workshop, Dr Labi gave an in-depth overview of Data Science and the value that can be derived from mining, collecting, and analysing data effectively. After Dr Labi’s session, participants were equipped to independently proffer ingenious data-driven solutions for problems in diverse sectors of the Nigerian economy. In addition, µDAI sensitised the participants on the upcoming Data Science for SMEs project in 2019. A survey was also conducted to know the expectations of Nigerian SMEs for the project in 2019.

The µDAI team also met with Misan Rewane, the founder of Wave Academy in their office in Yaba Lagos. During the meeting, both teams discussed possible areas of collaboration and Misan Rewane shared insights with the µDAI team on the SMEs landscape in Nigerian.

Finally, the µDAI visited Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB), Nigeria’s first open living lab and pre-incubation space in Yaba, Lagos. Both the CcHUB and µDAI teams discussed ways in which µDAI can contribute to the FbStart Accelerator Program sponsored by Facebook to leverage on the Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Data Science.
